Construction of hotels, transport networks and other infrastructure facilities around ancient forts, temples, historical monuments and in remote villages known for their unique products such as Kota Doria saries or Madhubani paintings are set to get a boost with the government embarking upon a major programme to develop rural infrastructure around such centres.
The finance ministry has earmarked $200 million (around Rs 960 crore) to be spent this year in this regard in five states--Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The ministry is also getting a $150 million assistance from the Asian Development Bank for a similar project focusing on khadi weavers called `subsistence to prosperity'. Besides supporting the livelihood in rural areas, this project would enable tourists to reach the community that acquired its skills over the centuries and avoid buying fakes. The finance ministry has started implementing an ambitious government-private partnership project in rural infrastructure that would create jobs in remote areas by tapping their tourism potential. This would also help in the market development of unique products that owe their premium to their geographical origin such as Kota doria saries from Kota in Rajasthan, Chanderi Saries from a place by the same name in Madhya Pradesh or Madhubani paintings from Mithila in Bihar. Public private partnerships are also set to change the way agriculture business is done in the country. The ministry is also in the process of improving agriculture infrastructure across its value chain. This would lead to state agencies and corporate houses jointly setting up business entities that would collect harvest, sort and aggregate various produces, process and store them in cold storages and transporting them to the market. The attempt is to introduce efficiency in these areas. ET
