In Yet another move to win back foreign tourists, the government has launched a scheme offering one night free stay at a spa centre in the country if a tourist books three nights at a wellness centre. The tourism ministry has tied up with leading wellness centre operators for the proposed scheme. The number of foreign tourist arrivals in the country is falling on the back of slowdown in the global economy. The move is part of the government's various initiatives to intensify the `Visit India 2009' campaign aimed at increasing foreign tourist arrivals.

"We have included wellness and spa also in our promotional offer which we have already launched. Tourists would be offered one more night at a spa centre in case they book for three nights," tourism secretary Sujit Banerjee said.

"Some foreign airlines such as Singapore Airlines and Air Asia have shown interest to join the promotional scheme launched by us," Mr Banerjee added.

To check the negative trend in the tourism industry, the government has started offering various incentives. Under its new scheme, companion of a foreign tourist would be offered free air passage. Domestic carriers such as Kingfisher, Air India and Jet Airways have joined hands with the government to offer the promotional package. As per the scheme, tour operators and hoteliers would also incentivise the tourists for taking their services. While tour operators would provide complementary sight-seeing, hoteliers would offer additional stay at their various properties. The offer would continue till the end of the year.

The number of foreign tourist visiting the country has been falling since November last year with the onset of global financial crisis. The numbers were further affected by the terror attacks in Mumbai, which resulted into various countries issuing advisories to their nationals to restrict their visit to India.
