AS the mercury continues to shoot northwards, there is a rush of people towards cooler destinations like Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. This has led to a 30 per cent increase in the number of people opting for domestic travel destinations as compared to the previous season.

According to Veena Patil, chairman and managing director ( CMD) of Kesari Tours and Travels, compared to last year there has been a huge jump in their domestic travel business.

" For certain destinations, there has been a 70 per cent increase. On an average the growth has been around 30 per cent as compared to last year," she said.

Last year people were reluctant to undertake any travel activity, she added.

"This year in nearly all our segments, we are witnessing an increase. Cool places like Kashmir have become a huge hit. We have started around 35 buses operating on a daily basis there. People are actually forgetting about terrorism and just enjoying the cool climate there," she said, adding even people from the south are opting for the cooler southern travel destinations this summer.

The number of foreign inbound tourists too, increased 1.7 per cent to 3.54 lakh during the month of April. The growth however, was less compared to the previous month as the volcanic eruption forced most of the European airspace to close down.

Karan Anand, head-relationships and supplier management, Cox and Kings added that domestic tourism has grown by more than 30 per cent and their company's growth is in line with industry trends.

Anand informed that cooler places like the North East, Kashmir, Leh and Ladakh, and beach destinations like Kerala and Himachal Pradesh are highly popular.

" Domestic holidays have been the mainstay of tourism in India. There are more places to visit and the state governments of Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and North East have been aggressive in wooing domestic tourists. Increased connectivity with the launch of additional flights to these places from the metros has been the key to the growth," he said.

Subash Verma, vice president of the Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India ( ADTOI) said hotel rooms in places like Kullu- Manali and Shimla are fully booked for the season. " It would be very difficult to get rooms this season.

Last season there was a drop of seven to eight per cent in the overall domestic travel business," he said.

In 2009, around 11 million domestic travellers and four lakh foreign tourists visited Himachal Pradesh.
